Digital fundraising resources

There’s a lot of resources out there on digital fundraising – so I’ve collated some of the best ones I’ve found.

Must reads

Forward Action has created a series of posts for charities that are looking to rapidly scale up their digital fundraising efforts:
Tried and tested tactics to drive online donations, with low lead in times
Quick-to-implement optimisation wins to make the most of increased traffic
Longer lead time, but with potential to deliver high returns over the next few

Getting started with digital fundraising

If you only read one thing, make it Reason Digital’s Digital Fundraising Book. I’ve had a hard copy on my shelf for years. It’s brilliant and gives practical advice on digital fundraising. Reason Digital has kindly made the book available as a free PDF. Grab it while you can.

Upskilling your digital knowledge

All digital fundraising will require digital skills. These resources are an excellent place to start.
Platypus Digital has lots of 40 minute practical videos on YouTube on how charities can get the most out of digital tools including Google ad grants, Facebook ads, SEO and email marketing.
The charity digital toolkit is a must-read for anyone doing anything with digital in the charity sector. There are chapters on excelling at email, what data is useful to analyse and how Marie Curie uses digital for fundraising.
Got more time and want to do some courses? Google’s Digital Garage has loads of free courses on digital marketing from SEO to understanding online behaviours.

More advanced stuff

If you are already doing digital fundraising but want to level up – these are the links for you.
Adrian O’Flynn has some really excellent resources including e-books on how to use Facebook lead ads to bag 5 regular givers a day and how to find and acquire new donors online.
#FRO2019 (a free online fundraising conference) has shared all of the videos from last year including topics such as messaging channels for fundraising, optimising your website for donations and leveraging the power of Facebook’s giving tools.
This podcast from Digital Charity Lab has some seriously excellent advice on how to strategically use Facebook ads. It includes tips on how to choose your target audiences, how to run split tests and what images to choose.
If you are thinking about crowdfunding this is a really great post by Lucy Gower on her experience of setting one up.

Digital fundraising inspiration

Want some ideas of what other charities are doing with digital fundraising?
NSPCC’s digital team set up The Digital Dunk to share what they’ve been doing, including what’s worked and what hasn’t, and things they’ve learnt along the way.
Madeleine Sugden regularly shares digital best practice in the sector. This link will take you to digital fundraising specific stuff – with loads of inspiration on what other charities are doing.

Who to follow

Finally, I’ve created a list on Twitter of some of the people who work in the sector who tweet about digital fundraising stuff. Let me know if there’s anyone else you think I should add!
Note: The image on this blog post has nothing to do with digital fundraising, but you probably need to see some nice images of cats and dogs right now – so this is my three being daft.
